Love Me Some Yummy Thai Food

Happy Saturday, everyone! Today, I’m back and sharing all the details on one of my favorite food tucks in town: Yummy Thai Food. Like I said in my last post, given that this blog is all about Austin food, it’s about time I write a post on a food truck.

First, let me give you some backstory. Last year, it was a cold, dreary night during finals week, and I was exhausted from working on a final project all day. I didn’t want to cook dinner and I couldn’t be bothered to leave the house to get food. So, I turned to my favorite lazy-girl app, Favor. I was craving some good Asian food, and after seeing good reviews for Yummy Thai Food, I decided to place an order for chicken stir-fry and veggie egg rolls. Honestly, I did not know what to expect from my delivery, but after devouring my food, I knew I was going to be a repeat customer.

A few days ago, I finally got the chance to visit this place in person. Upon first glance, this food truck looks very unassuming and a bit sketchy. Honestly, had I not known the quality of food coming out of this place, I probably would have passed over it. But, please don’t. You will not be disappointed by Yummy Thai Food.

The menu at Yummy Thai Food

Their menu, while small, provides a variety of traditional Thai food options. My personal favorite is the Thai basil fried rice with chicken. Sometimes, I’ll also order the veggie egg rolls or coconut shrimp appetizers if I’m really hungry. Just go up to the counter to place your order, and they will call your name when your food is ready!

While you wait, you can grab a spot at one of the picnic tables and people watch, as the truck is located in a food truck park on Rainey Street. Some of the other food trucks offer Mexican, Greek, American, and Indian food, which I am anxious to go back and try out.

Once my order was called, I couldn’t wait to dig into my food. As you can see below, I ordered both the coconut shrimp and veggie egg roll appetizers. (I was particularly hangry this day, and I was planning on sharing with a friend anyways!) Each appetizer comes with this unbelievably good sweet and sour sauce. It’s a bit spicy, but it pairs so well with the coconut shrimp and the veggie egg rolls.

I also tore through my Thai basil fried rice with chicken (pictured below). This stuff is unreal. Filled with carrots, onion, peppers, egg, chicken, basil, and Thai chilies, this fried rice is so flavorful and packs in a nice amount of heat. Honestly, it might be overwhelmingly spicy to some (like a few of my friends); however, I think the heat level is just right as it deepens the flavor of the other elements in the dish. Nonetheless, in my opinion, this meal is a wonderful balance between savory and spicy Thai flavors.
